HOME AIR SEALING SAVES ENERGY AND MONEY

When air is allowed to leak through your building’s envelope—the outer walls, cracks around windows or doors, and other openings—a lot of energy is wasted and your utility costs go up. A well-sealed home or multi-family property, coupled with the right amount of insulation, can make a real difference in utility bills and overall comfortability!

Most homes in the United States (especially older homes built before 1985) don’t have enough insulation and have significant air leaks. In fact, if you add up all the leaks in a home’s envelope, it is typically the equivalent of having a window open every day of the year! Most homes in the United States (especially older homes built before 1985) don’t have enough insulation and have significant air leaks. HOW TO SOLVE INDOOR DRAFTS

One sign that a home or building is riddled with air leakage is indoor drafts. Even if leaks are invisible to the naked eye, or hidden in unused areas like the attic or crawl space, the effects of these tiny holes can be felt in nearly every area. For example, a home with poor insulation and lots of air leakage in the attic will attract heat from the living space up through the ceiling, where the air then leaks outside through the roof. This escaping air will be replaced by incoming air from air gaps in other areas, like the basement. This creates indoor drafts that can be felt throughout the entire house!

THE BENEFITS OF AIR SEALING

Sealing leaks and adding insulation can improve the overall comfort of a home or building and lead to many benefits, including:

  • IMPROVED SOUNDPROOFING

  • INCREASED HUMIDITY CONTROL

  • LESS POLLEN, DUST, AND PEST INFESTATIONS

  • LOWER CHANCE FOR ICE DAMS

INCREASE COMFORT

Sealing leaks and adding insulation can improve the overall comfort of your home and help to fix many of these common problems:

  • Reduce noise from outside

  • Better humidity control

  • Less pollen, duct and insects (or pests) entering your home

  • Lower chance for ice dams on the roof eves in our snowy climates

WHY CHOOSE THE BUILDING ENERGY EXPERTS?

Part of a job well done starts with using the right products and materials. We keep up with the latest technologies and advances in the industry, but we also employ time-tested methods and materials. In order to ensure we seal up every air gap we possibly can, Building Energy Experts begins each air sealing service near you with a blower door test, which is the same test we use in our energy assessments. This is an air leak test for buildings that tells us how much air leakage is present. We then use infrared imaging to locate all the gaps throughout a home, multi-family building, or commercial structure so we can permanently seal them.

INSULATION AND AIR SEALING GO HAND-IN-HAND

If you are looking into weatherization upgrades to increase your overall comfort and efficiency, insulation and air sealing are two energy efficiency improvements that you can’t miss out on. Air sealing makes insulation more effective at reducing energy loss, and insulation makes air sealing more effective at reducing outside air infiltration!
